Koyaanisqatsi

Visual Identity | Budapest Metropolitan University | 2020

The brief

This visual identity was made for the experimental-documentary Kyoaanisqatsi (from 1984), during my exchange semester in Budapest, in 2020.

The film takes us through an audio/visual trip, from barren landscapes to industrialisation and mass-production, accompanied by Philip Glass’s soundtrack.

My visual interpretation of this resulted in a collage of images.

  • Sunset and sea consisting of two individual shots I captured in Norway

  • Silhouettes of American skyscrapers I morphed into canyons (using online resources and Adobe)

I worked with the typography by combining CAPS and lower cases - slightly glitching throughout the title. Much like the word’s Hopi Indian definition:
Koyaanisqatsi - life out of balance.
